Million Dollar Island Remains Badly Viewed: ‘Yet Another SBS Failure’

A major downer for John de Mol: his show Million Dollar Island remains poorly viewed on SBS 6. “If you google for ‘failures and SBS’, you get a very long list.”

After 569 thousand, 613 thousand, 427 thousand, 500 thousand and 482 thousand viewers, the sixth episode of Million Dollar Island managed to captivate 539 thousand viewers (12% market share) on SBS 6 yesterday. That is far too few for such a expensive and large-scale programme. Immediately before that, Undercover in the Netherlands reached 479 thousand viewers (8%).

Long flop list

Format developer Kirsten-Jan van Nieuwenhuijzen tells The Telegraph that the list of SBS flops is getting very long. Yet he praises John de Mol for at least trying. “The one who takes the most risk is John de Mol, he can afford that as a self-made billionaire.”

John still tries a lot of programs, but: “If you google ‘failures and SBS’, you get a very long list: HLF 8, This is our house, The last question – all no success lately. But he tries things. Marble Mania, Million Dollar Island are not a huge success, but they are already sold internationally.”

Farming on one

Actually, there is only one top scorer on Sunday evening: Yvon Jaspers with her dating show Farmer Searches Woman. This time, 2.9 million people (46%). Subsequently, Who Do You Think You Are attracted 1.1 million viewers (22%). Thoroughly finished the evening with 704 thousand viewers (19%).

RTL 4 takes silver with Beat the Champions (879 thousand and 15%) and Humberto (611 thousand and 15%). NPO 2 was also most popular with a documentary about Ukrainian President Zelensky (554 thousand) and Nieuwsuur (611 thousand).

Viewing figures

Programs that (also) did not reach the top fifteen viewing figures are, among others, Hart van Nederland (472 thousand), vtwonen (468 thousand), Shownieuws (462 thousand) and Media Inside (191 thousand).
