Berlin, military draft with lottery is scary: «Unacceptable»

A novelty defined as “incredible” and “unacceptable” for many Berliners, and in a historical moment in which threats from Russia continue to cause great fear. “If you have children, and especially boys, like me, you cannot agree – says a man – I too did not serve in the military, I refused… If you have children of your own, you cannot help but criticize this provision”.

“I understand that it is necessary to have an effective army,” says a 21-year-old. “However, I don’t think that one-year compulsory military service for 18-year-olds is necessarily appropriate. Furthermore, the way politics is currently discussing young people, with proposals for random selection processes, makes me think that decisions are being made without consulting the young people themselves. Personally, I wouldn’t want to do that either.”

The lottery system, to decide who to enlist

But debate over Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government’s plan for a lottery system to randomly decide who to conscript is growing, after Defense Minister Boris Pistorius rejected the idea as a “lazy compromise” that would take too long to implement. “Well, I wouldn’t agree to do it voluntarily – specifies the boy – I think that if I were extracted I wouldn’t be in favor and I would try to reverse the situation”.

“I find it incredible to even think of such an idea – says a retired woman – Should young people draw lots to decide whether they will be killed or kill others? Both things are terrible. No, it is absolutely unacceptable. Completely unacceptable.”
