Miley Cyrus says she “didn’t earn a penny” during her 2014 BANGERZ tour. The singer clarifies this in the 30th episode of her TikTok series “Used To Be Young”. On the occasion of her single of the same name, she looks back on important moments in her career and reclassifies them. So did the nine-month tour for their fourth studio album BANGERZ.
Miley Cyrus had a very clear vision for the tour concept and wanted the shows to be really outstanding for everyone involved, as she explains in her video. However, she had problems finding sponsors who wanted to bring these ideas to life. “A lot of these ideas were so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me,” reflects the American singer. So she financed the tour’s props herself, like the giant dolls and beds, as well as the oversized depiction of her face with her tongue sliding away from it as a slide.
Cyrus also worked with her creative director, Diane Martel, to develop a concept for the end of each of the 78 live shows. The singer wanted to draw a connection to Jim Carrey’s “Truman Show”. The 1998 film follows an insurance salesman whose life is unknowingly broadcast as a reality TV show. “So I flew out on a giant hot dog and walked through the clouds towards the exit sign like Jim Carrey does because I felt like The Truman Show was a reflection of my life,” Miley Cyrus explains about the background to hers Concert Finale.
When asked why she’s doing all this when she ultimately earned nothing from her tour, Cyrus replies, “There’s no one I’d rather invest in than myself. So I paid everything to make it just that , which I think I and the fans deserve.”

Miley Cyrus’ eighth studio album ENDLESS SUMMER VACATION was released in March 2023. Her single “Flowers” stayed at number one on the US charts for five weeks. In her current video format “Used To Be Young”, the singer also talks about the moment when she fell in love with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth on the set of “Mit Dir An Meiner Seite” and continues to talk about the creation of her song “Wrecking Ball”.
