Milan, the meeting in San Donato for the stadium

The event is part of a timetable of 6 meetings between institutions and the territory and also involved residents

Michele Antonelli

The key word repeated several times is “participation”. Francesco Squeri, mayor of San Donato Milanese, opened with these tones the meeting scheduled in the Municipality with the citizens, to update on the state of the art of the project for the new AC Milan stadium. The event is part of a timetable of 6 meetings between institutions and the territory and also involved residents.

THE PROGRAM AGREEMENT

After the introduction of the mayor and engineer Domenico Martini, manager of the land management area, the discussion moved to the topic of the program agreement, at which point the project proposal will enter the operational phase. In two years, it will have to be closed and therefore all investigations into the feasibility of the plan will have to be done in this time frame. Among the first questions brought to the attention of the administration, citizens ask themselves why the choice to occupy a total of 54 hectares of land with a “pharaonic project”. “The San Francesco area has been open to building since 1993 – explained Squeri -. In that area there has already been a resolution from the previous administration, which confirmed that Sportlifecity (the company that owns the area where the plant should be built, ed. ) can build”.

I LISTEN

The theme brought up by most of those present is that of listening, in reference to the citizens’ uncertainty in seeing such a large-scale change in everyday life: “It’s not just like that – Squeri’s reply -. A lot of people stop me on the street people who want the stadium, because it is a great development opportunity for the city. The previous administration experienced two periods where there was the possibility of building it. In 2013, Inter came forward with the Moratti family. Then the question did not it went ahead, but it doesn’t mean that the will wasn’t there. As usual, if one is an administrator the stadium can be an opportunity, when you move to the opposition the vision changes.”

REFERENDUM HYPOTHESIS

More than a few interventions call for the consultative referendum: “There is a regulation in the municipality – replies the mayor -. A committee of guarantors must be formed and the request will be evaluated, at the moment I cannot give certain dates. 7, 8 or 9 may be needed months, we wait. There is no fear of asking for an opinion.” The other popular topic is that of mobility. The answer comes here from engineer Martini: “Are the discussions on the railway system and shuttle to enhance transport too vague? All these problems will be highlighted in the definition of the program agreement, which is why the preliminary phase is of great importance. It serves to have alerts, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana will also be involved and we will have answers on many aspects”. A question posed to the mayor is whether the Municipality will have the strength to stop the project if the bodies involved do not respect their promises, for example regarding infrastructures: “If these things are not implemented in accordance with the program agreement, the Municipal Council will vote against ” closes Squeri.

next steps

Brief recap on the next steps. The meeting on Tuesday evening is part of a calendar of the administration of San Donato Milanese to clearly define the steps of the stadium issue. A new conference of group leaders, a meeting of the “Land Management” Commission and a meeting of the City Council are scheduled for the second half of the month. On that occasion, the assembly will be called to take note of the launch of the regional competence program agreement.
