Milan saves championship lead with luck

AC Milan successfully defended their lead in the Italian soccer championship with a late win at Lazio Roma.

The Rossoneri won 2-1 (0-1) in the capital with the comeback of veteran star Zlatan Ibrahimovic through a goal by Sandro Tonali in added time.

Milan are still two points ahead of defending champion and local rivals Inter, who celebrated a 3-1 (2-0) win in the top game against AS Roma with his substitute international Robin Gosens. However, the master still has a catch-up game up his sleeve.

Meanwhile, SSC Napoli had to accept a decisive setback in the title race. The southern Italians fell seven points behind Milan after losing 3-2 at FC Empoli.

Milan had a hard time avoiding their fall from first place. Despite the overwhelming superiority, Tonali only redeemed the guests in the fourth minute of injury time. Previously, Olivier Giroud (50th) had compensated for the early Lazio lead by ex-Dortmunder Ciro Immobile (4th). Ibrahimovic came on in the final stages after suffering knee problems in recent weeks but failed to score.

Inter celebrate fourth league win in a row

Inter were clearly in the lead in their fourth league win in a row with Denzel Dumfries (30th) and a remarkable flick from Marcelo Brozovic (40th) even before the break. Lautaro Martinez increased (52nd) in the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, and former Dortmund player Henrich Mchitarjan (85th) scored for Rome.

In the basement of the table, CFC Genoa draws new hope in the relegation battle with German coach Alexander Blessin and national player Nadiem Amiri. With the 1-0 (0-0) win against Cagliari Calcio, Blessin’s team in the penultimate place in the table at least has the non-relegation places in sight again. Ex-Leverkusen Amiri was substituted during the break and only saw his team’s winning goal from Milan Badelj (89′) off the bench.
