StIt has been 150 years since the disappearance of Alessandro Manzoni which took place on 22 May 1873 and its city, Milan, celebrate it and remember it with a schedule of events worthy of a much loved character.
After all, the author of the Betrothed he was a genuine Milanese, so much so that he even underlined it on the title page of the «Inni Sacri» where he wanted it to be written: «by Alessandro Manzoni, from Milan».
150 years after his death: Milan celebrates Manzoni
There writer’s house which today has become a museum, will be the centerpiece of events which will expand to other significant places for Manzoni’s memory, from the Cathedral to the church of San Fedele, his parish and many others.
A program modulated on the most diverse forms of expression with readings, guided tours, concerts and exhibitions to retrace the history of one of the figures who best represents the Milanese capital.
What happens in the house of the great writer
The heart of the celebrations, we said, will be right there Manzoni’s house in via Morone 1 which welcomes the Manzoni Museum.
One will be offered tour of the house in ten sections which retrace different itineraries in the life and work of the writer. And iOn May 22, the date of the writer’s death, the Casa will open to the city with free admission.
The Cathedral and Manzoni
The Duomo will be another of the places chosen for the Milanese celebrations dedicated to Manzoni. From 9 to 31 May during the weekactors and emerging talents from the main Italian and Milanese theaters they will take turns reading the entire “I promessi sposi”. The live broadcast will also be broadcast streaming on the YouTube channel “Duomo Milano TV”.
The evenings will be free admission subject to availability, with reservation required on the site.
There theatrical reading, only for 26 May, will move to Piazza San Fedelenear the parish dear to Manzoni.
The concert under the vaults
Also at the Duomo, under its splendid vaults, on May 22 and after the reading there will be a special performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem, performed by the Milan Symphony Orchestra
Exhibitions in the city
Various exhibitions in the city will celebrate Alessandro Manzoni under different aspects. From 4 May to 8 July the exhibition “Manzoni 1873-2023. The horrible plague scourge between living and writing” at the Braidense National Library.
In the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana the exhibition “The books of Don Ferrante in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana”
From 3 May, and until 4 June, the project “In the footsteps of Manzoni. A journey through works, books and archival documents at the Museo del Risorgimento”.
Cinema and theatre
On 26 and 27 May theatrical performances and readings by actors in costume for the Widespread Festival “Manzoniana Night”. The places chosen are the Corsia dei Servi, Piazza Duomo, Piazza San Fedele, Piazza Belgioioso.
The Bruno Munari Theater will stage the show “Manzoni without a filter”, while from 3 to 14 May at Pact of Theaters is the protagonist”The nun of Monza alias Sister Virginia Maria alias Marianna Leyva”.
The Grassi Little Theatre dedicates two initiatives to Manzoni in the autumn: from 12 to 22 October the show “The betrothed to the provto” and November 20th “That branch of Lake Como which turns south. Manzoni evening”.
