Milan Area C, the admission price increases from 30 October

The times and criteria for parking on the blue lines change. The extension of the Ztl also to the weekend and the stop to traffic in the Fashion District is being studied

Increase in the cost of entering Area C in Milan, change of timetables and paid parking criteria on the blue lines, stop cars in the fashion district, 1,000 more taxi licenses. These are all measures discussed in the municipal council of the Lombard capital which examined a mobility package. Some provisions, such as the increase in the Area C ticket and the parking hours, are immediately enforceable. Others are city government guidelines. Here are the main decisions of the junta.

Area C

From 30 October, the entry ticket to the limited traffic zone of the historic center Area C will increase, going from 5 euros to 7.50. Entry to the ztl will also be paid on Saturdays and holidays and not only from Monday to Friday as now, but there is no date yet for this modification because it is a guideline of the junta and this part of the provision will have to go through the City Council. “We haven’t touched this admission price in ages – explained the mayor Giuseppe Sala – and 7.50 euros is not a random number, in fact we had symbolically linked the Area C ticket to that of the public transport ticket, which was 1.50 when Area C was introduced and is now 2.20”. Residents, as the mayor explained, will not pay to enter the Ztl on weekends and holidays. After the fortieth free entry during the week they will pay 3 euros. Once fully operational, the Municipality estimates that it will collect about 15 million euros more, today the revenues of Area C are 30 million a year, “but it is not a measure aimed at collecting – explained the councilor for Mobility Arianna Censi – but not to let cars enter the city centre”. The decision to also include payment on weekends and holidays derives from the fact that “we are seeing that the number of entries on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays – explained Sala – is the same as on other days, it is not people who enter to go to the work but for shopping and walking around”.

Stop on the blue lines

The times and criteria for paid parking also change. In the Cerchia dei Bastioni parking is currently subject to a fee from 8 in the morning to 24. The approved resolution limits the possibility of parking, from 8 to 19 on every day of the week, for a maximum of two consecutive hours, to discourage long stays of cars and encourage the rotation of seats. After 19 and until 24, the possibility of parking for a fee remains unchanged, but without time limitations. For other areas, where payment is expected until 1 pm, the payment time is instead extended until 7 pm and extended to all working days, including Saturdays. This change will affect the areas already regulated and all the areas that will be established in the area of the Cerchia Extrafiloviaria. The new regulations will be in force with the progressive affixing of the relative signage with completion by October 2023.

Fashion Quadrilateral

Among the approved guidelines, the junta asked the mobility management to elaborate a proposal for the limitation of vehicular traffic in the area of the fashion district and surrounding streets. The guidelines envisage maintaining the possibility for residents and domiciled persons to access owned garages or internal parking spaces and, where compatible, park in the dedicated spaces; the option for customers of the car parks in the structure to access them; the guarantee of having the appropriate methods and times for loading and unloading the goods.

Taxi

On taxis, the junta has resolved to ask the Lombardy Region for 1,000 more taxi licenses to try to address the shortage of cars in the city. “We will shortly, by mid-July – explained the mayor Giuseppe Sala at the end of the council that launched a mobility package – a request to the Region that has the ownership, to have 1000 more licenses, we have been discussing with taxi drivers for a long time We can continue with tests and mediations but we’ve been working on it for a long time, if there’s one thing that citizens and tourists are asking for, it’s this”. “There is respect for taxi drivers but I tell them that the way of living in the city has changed a lot, especially with tourism – he continued -. We have gone from 5 to 10 million tourists”.
