Mike Teunissen: ‘Amstel Gold Race can go in all directions’ | 1Limburg

Mike Teunissen expects an Amstel Gold Race on Sunday that can go in all directions. The rider from Ysselsteyn also sees a role for himself in coloring the race.

Teunissen looked ahead on Saturday evening in a special broadcast of L1 Sports

Very special
The Limburger is looking forward to his third participation in the Gold Race. “Riding this race is also very special. It doesn’t happen too often for me either.” Jumbo-Visma, Teunissen’s team, will start the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday without an outspoken leader. The original leader, Wout van Aert, cannot start because he is not yet fit after a corona infection. “We are going to take a different course,” said the Limbuger on the eve of the Gold Race.

Cards
According to Teunissen, Jumbo-Visma can play several cards on Sunday. “Of course we have a sprinter in Christophe Laporte who is in shape. And then we have Tom Dumoulin, Tiesj Benoot, Nathan van Hooydonck and myself who can force something for the final. It can also go in many directions, partly due to the course change.”

wall of sound
Teunissen expects a large audience on the side of the road on Sunday to encourage the riders. “In the Tour of Flanders there was a wall of noise at one point and I hope it will be the same on Sunday. That is also a lot nicer for the experience for ourselves.”

Dumoulin
At Jumbo-Visma, Teunissen will ride on Sunday together with Tom Dumoulin, the other Limburger in the Amstel Gold Race. Former cyclist Bram Tankink is curious what Dumoulin can show on Sunday. Former cyclist Bram Tankink and cycling journalist Raymond Kerckhoffs spoke in L1 Sport about their expectations of the Maastricht citizen.
