Former US Vice President Mike Pence says his former boss Donald Trump is wrong when he says Pence could have blocked the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
Trump said Sunday, as he has repeatedly claimed, that Pence could have blocked the determination of the election results on January 6, 2021. As vice president, Pence presided over the meeting. Trump has maintained that his has been “stolen” since the 2020 election. On ratification day, the Capitol in Washington DC was stormed by Trump supporters. Relations between Trump and Pence have deteriorated since then.
“President Trump is wrong,” Pence said during a speech in Florida. “I had no right to destroy the election results. The presidency belongs to the American people. There is honestly no idea more un-American than the idea that a single person can elect the American president.”
Pence also said he understood the disappointment with the election results. “I was on the ballot myself. But whatever the future holds, I know we did our duty that day,” referring to ratification on January 6, 2021. “The truth is, there is more at stake than our political party or our political future. If we lose confidence in our constitution, we will not only lose elections, but lose our country.”
