Mike Pence refutes controversial claim by former boss Donald Trump | Abroad

Trump said Sunday, as he has repeatedly claimed, that Pence could have blocked the determination of the election results on January 6, 2021. As vice president, Pence presided over the meeting. Trump has maintained since the 2020 election that his has been “stolen” without providing any evidence. On ratification day, the Capitol in Washington DC was stormed by Trump supporters. Relations between Trump and Pence have deteriorated since then.

“President Trump is wrong,” Pence said during a speech in Florida. “I had no right to destroy the election results. The presidency belongs to the American people. There is honestly nothing more un-American than the idea that a single person can elect the American president.”

At the same time, Pence said he understood the disappointment with the election results. “I was on the ballot myself. But whatever the future holds, I know we did our duty that day,” referring to ratification on January 6, 2021. “The truth is, there is more at stake than just our political party or our political future. . If we lose faith in our constitution, we will not only lose elections, we will lose our country.”
