Mike Pence, ex-Vice President of Trump, is running against his old boss as presidential candidate | Abroad

UpdateRepublican Mike Pence, who was Donald Trump’s vice president from 2017 to 2021, is running for president in 2024. The 63-year-old Pence filed official paperwork today to run for office. He will formally announce his candidacy in Iowa on Wednesday.

In the battle for the Republican nomination, Pence will compete against his former boss Trump, among others. The two were staunch allies during their tenure, but Pence turned on Trump by confirming Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. Pence gradually distanced himself from his ex-boss’s statements, but says he is proud of the results of the Trump administration.

His former boss is currently leading the internal Republican polls. More than half of the supporters want the former president to be their candidate. Barely a few percent favor Pence, the polls show.

Christian, conservative and Republican

Pence often says he considers himself “a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order.” The former governor of Indiana (2013-2017) and veteran of the House of Representatives (2001-2013) has been described by the American news channel ‘CNN’ as a “loyal deputy” for Trump.

Pence achieved success in his position as chairman of the White House corona task force and laid the foundation for the distribution of the vaccines. His break with Trump came after the lost presidential election in 2020.

The former president tried to pressure Pence both publicly and privately to reject the results in key swing states. Trump maintains – without providing any evidence – to this day that he lost the election due to fraud and voter fraud in those states.

On the day of the official confirmation of the election results, January 6, 2021, Trump did very little to dissuade his supporters from storming the Capitol. That, while Pence was inside and part of the crowd was chanting death threats against the Vice President. The former running mate therefore testified against his old boss in the investigation into the storming.
