Goggia defies serious injury
The fight for the small crystal ball was still open before the race. Although Goggia was 75 points ahead of Corinne Suter before the race, it was not entirely clear whether the leader would be in top form at the start in Courchevel. In training she was insecure. With her outstanding start to the season, Goggia had laid the foundation for the high lead in the discipline ranking. Three wins in the first three descents, then the triumph in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
But Goggia fell badly in the Super-G at her home World Cup in Cortina, tore her anterior cruciate ligament and had a small fracture in her fibula. Despite this serious injury, the Italian competed two weeks later at the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, where she took silver – behind Sutter.
Goggia starts as the winner
Sutter started third. She had problems on the slopes and couldn’t find the best line. When she crossed the finish line, one thing was clear: Goggia had won the Downhill World Cup. Because Sutter was third in the meantime – in order to snatch the title from the Italian, she would have had to finish second and hope for Goggia’s failure.
So Goggia went to the start with the certainty that she had won the small crystal globe of the Downhill World Cup for the third time in her career. In the end, her run was enough for twelfth place.
Exciting remaining program at the World Cup final
In the coming days there are still four races on the program for the women at the World Cup finals in Courchevel. The Super-G continues on Thursday (10:00 a.m.). After the team event on Friday, a giant slalom and slalom are on the program for the weekend.
