Movistar Estudiantes has reported the death, at the age of 73, of Miguel Ángel Martín, one of the most relevant coaches in the history of the Madrid club, which he directed between 1988 and 1994.

During this stage, the entity achieved two highly relevant successes, such as the conquest of the Copa del Rey in Granada and the participation in the final four of the Europa League held in Istanbul, both in 1992. He also led the team to finish five consecutive times in the top four of the ACB League, to be cup runner-up in 1991 and to reach the quarterfinals of the Korac Cup that same year.

Affectionately nicknamed ‘El Cura’, Martín arrived at the quarry from Alcorcón in 1984 and later, already in 1988, he took charge of the first team. Relevant names such as Nacho Azofra, Alberto Herreros, César Arranz, Alfonso Reyes, Iñaki de Miguel, Álex Escudero or Pablo and Gonzalo Martínez would debut under him.

The relationship between both parties ended in the middle of the 94-95 season, when he was replaced by his assistant José Vicente ‘Pepu’ Hernández. They completed their career on the bench with stays at Real Madrid, CB Granada, Universidad Complutense and Adepal Alcázar de San Juan.

The club has announced that a minute’s silence will be held in his memory before matches that the women’s team must play on Thursday, December 1 in the Endesa Women’s League against Islas Canarias and that the men’s team will play on Sunday, December 4 in LEB Oro against Andorra.
