Mieke Dobbels receives Van Acker prize

Mieke Dobbels (45) grew up in Nieuwpoort and graduated from the Conservatory in Ghent. She works as curator of Westfront in Nieuwpoort. Until the end of September, she will run ‘Vertilde Stad’. In addition, Mieke has been displaying her versatile creative talent for years as an actress in theater plays, including ‘Andy en Karolien’, with guest roles in television series, from ‘Eigen Kweek’ to ‘Chantal’ and in films, such as ‘Rain anyway’; as a screenwriter, author of books and director of plays.

For many decades, the Van Acker Foundation has wanted to put socially engaged artists or organizations in the spotlight. “Mieke Dobbels operates in the undercurrent and gives a voice to those who seem forgotten,” says chairman André Van Nieuwkerke. “Mieke is best known as an actress with Compagnie Cecilia and co-author of ‘The Broken Circle Breakdown’. She is particularly notable for always wanting to give a voice to people who have ended up in society’s oblivion.”

Mieke Dobbels is also the author of children’s books that make themes such as autism and ADHD understandable for the children who receive this diagnosis. She will be officially presented with the prize on 13 June in Ghent. This puts her in the line of other winners, such as Hugo Claus, Louis Paul Boon, Daan and Lieve Blancquaert.
