The first trailer for the horror comedy, in which the cult mouse himself becomes a murderer, is online.
For decades, media company Disney has worked hard to ensure that their most famous brand ambassador, Mickey Mouse, is protected by copyright. But that has changed with the launch of 2024 – the first version of the iconic cartoon character (known from the 1928 short film “Steamboat Willie“) is now free and no longer protected by copyright. After almost a hundred years, artists are now allowed to copy and adapt the image of the black and white mouse without having to obtain permission from Disney. The first such feat has now been teased – the horror-comedy flick “Mickey’s Mouse Trap.”
In the horror work, Mickey Mouse will appear as a masked killer. The film attracts with a mixture of horror and humor by putting the famous character in an unusual role. In the press release for the trailer, director Jamie Bailey emphasizes the fun they had making it and points out that the seemingly absurd film idea was part of the appeal of the project: “We just wanted to have fun with it. I mean, it’s Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse murdering people. That’s ridiculous. We had fun doing it and I think it shows.”
Mickey Mouse as a murderous joker
The trailer gives a foretaste of the bizarre plot, which takes up elements from well-known scary works such as “Scream” and “Five Nights At Freddy’s”. It shows a masked killer in a Mickey Mouse costume who haunts his victims in an arcade. The bizarre atmosphere of the work is reinforced by humorous elements, such as a character who humorously comments on the cliché of the genre. The film is expected to be released in March 2024, although details (whether streaming or cinema) are still open.
