Hollywood star Tom Cruise is considered one of the last actors to reliably produce blockbusters – actor Mickey Rourke doesn’t care, sees it differently: “He’s been playing the same damn role for 35 years”.
In an interview for British television network Talk TV, Rourke revealed his opinion on Tom Cruise. After a nod to the success of action film Top Gun: Maverick, the 69-year-old said: “I don’t give a fuck. The guy has been playing the same role for 35 years. I have no respect for that.” When asked if Cruise was a good actor, he replied again, “I think he’s irrelevant, in my world.” A harsh judgment on the 59-year-old colleague, who has not only embodied action heroes in his career, but has also tried to succeed in dramas under the direction of filmmakers such as Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, PT Anderson and Oliver Stone.
“Top Gun: Maverick” in the ROLLING STONE review:
The most successful film of the year
Top Gun: Maverick has grossed over $1 billion at the box office worldwide. This makes it the highest-grossing film of 2022 so far. The sequel to the 1986 original has now overtaken the Marvel film Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022) as the highest-grossing film of the year. “Top Gun: Maverick” has generated the highest grossing of a non-superhero film since the corona pandemic with over a billion dollars in box office.
Rourke dreams of “Monty Clift and Brando in the old days”
Success, fame and money are irrelevant to Rourke – he says he “doesn’t care”. Rather, he is “interested in the work of Al Pacino and Chris Walken and De Niro’s early work and Richard Harris’ work and Ray Winstone’s work. That’s the kind of actor I want to be. Monty Clift and Brando in the Olden Days”. Mickey Rourke was discovered by Steven Spielberg in 1979 for the comedy Hollywood, 1941 (1979). His breakthrough came in the early 1980s with Barry Levinson’s “American Diner” (1982) and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Rumble Fish” (1983).
“Top Gun: Maverick” is currently still in German cinemas. Here is the trailer for the film:
