Mick Schumacher has to be content with the backup role at Mercedes in Formula 1. At the end of last year, the former Haas pilot was able to hope for a regular cockpit at Williams. Former team boss Jost Capito has now looked back at the exciting personnel situation.
Williams will compete in Formula 1 this season with the driver pairing consisting of Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant. However, the latter had to fight for his job for a long time because he had previously lacked the necessary points for the super license.
Because of this, Williams had to come up with a plan B. As ex-team boss Jost Capito revealed, Mick Schumacher was one of the alternatives.
Formula 1: Mick Schumacher one of several options
“Of course there were a few drivers for plan B: Mick is of course one, Antonio Giovinazzi would have been a driver who could have come with experience. Then there are a few young up-and-coming drivers from other teams. There are enough drivers to look out for then could have decided,” said Capito in an interview with “Champ1”.
The focus at Williams was clearly on Sargeant, as the 64-year-old made clear. “If it’s 98 percent sure that he can do it, then you have to work for the 98 percent first. If the two percent had really happened, then it would have been a problem that could then have been solved,” said Capito.
Formula 1: Sargeant thanks to super license to Williams
Since all other cockpits in Formula 1 were already taken, “no one would have one [anderen Fahrer] snatch away,” said Capito.
Ultimately, Sargeant collected the necessary points for the super license. Williams was thus able to present his desired solution. Capito, on the other hand, resigned from his position as team boss in Formula 1 at the end of last year.
