In the motorsport year 2024, Mick Schumacher will compete in a dual role. On the one hand, the 24-year-old is a regular driver for Alpine in the Endurance World Championship (WEC). On the other hand, he is still under contract with Mercedes in Formula 1 as a test and reserve driver. Michael Schumacher’s son has now revealed details about the deal.
“It has been agreed that I will – if necessary and possible – drive in Formula 1,” Schumacher replied to “SID” when asked what would happen if Mercedes needed a replacement and the racing weekends overlapped with the WEC.
Schumacher once again made no secret of his goal of Formula 1 in the interview. “My dream is and remains Formula 1. I’m following it all very closely, but ultimately I can only recommend myself for a cockpit again with good performances.”
Nevertheless, the ex-Haas driver is looking forward to the new challenge. “I’m super excited about the WEC and I’m extremely looking forward to racing again,” he said, adding: “The WEC is high-class racing and it will be fun to go there with Alpine. First and foremost, that’s where I want to be Racing. That’s what I’ve been doing since I was a kid, what I love, and what I’ve missed so much over the past year.”
Schumacher also sees certain similarities between the WEC and Formula 1. “The cars themselves and the driving are of course very different, but some of the systems used in Formula 1 are also used in the WEC,” explained the 24-year-old.
Therefore, the change was not that big; Schumacher quickly got used to the hypercar. “In a way it reminds me of the Formula 2 car I drove. The Alpine A424 is a very cool and powerful car,” he highlighted.
