The German talent achieved the best result of his career in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. Then he talks about his performance – and an ex-colleague dares to make a prediction.
26 races, 0 points to go – Mick Schumacher is still waiting for his real breakthrough in Formula 1. The 23-year-old, who is driving for Haas in his second year in the premier class, had a hard time, especially in the past few races. 11th place at the start of the season in Bahrain, after his serious crash in the heats for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, he dropped out of the race in the Kingdom. Then 13th place in Australia, in Emilia Romagna it was only enough for 17th place, in Miami finally 15th place jumped out.
In addition, Schumacher repeatedly made unnecessary mistakes, which a young driver can of course sometimes do. Driving mistakes, collisions – he also seemed a bit unsure of late.
The turning point in Spain?
But has Mick Schumacher reported back to Barcelona? For the first time ever, the driver made it into the last section of Q3 in a qualifying session, in which the top ten compete for pole position. And with 10th place at the Circuit de Catalunya, he achieved the best starting position of his career so far. He was “surprised that we actually had such a good qualifying session,” Schumacher said afterwards on Sky. “Without having driven this morning, there was still uncertainty in the set-up because the weather conditions were a bit different than yesterday.”
