Mick Schumacher has confidently thrown his name into the ring for the open cockpit at Mercedes from 2025. “It’s of course a position that brings a lot of pressure. But I feel like I’m up to it. But it’s not my decision. “My chance is here. I don’t know how big it is yet,” said the 24-year-old in an interview with RTL and ntv.
Schumacher has been without a cockpit since the end of 2022, and there is great hope for a comeback. “Formula 1 is still my big dream and my big love. So a Formula 1 cockpit is of course the big goal.”
Wolff doesn’t want to stir up speculation
As in the previous year, Mick Schumacher works as a replacement driver for Mercedes and is also involved in Alpine’s long-distance program. Hamilton is leaving Mercedes after this season and moving to Ferrari. It is unclear who will be the second driver alongside the Briton George Russell from 2025. “Who knows what else will happen in the driver market? There are a variety of options, I will take my time,” said team boss Toto Wolff last week.
Wolff did not encourage speculation about a German – whether Schumacher or, in the case of a comeback, Sebastian Vettel – as Hamilton’s successor. “I don’t want to pursue any romantic thoughts now because I haven’t yet thought about it with my colleagues about what the ideal driver lineup would be for us in 2025,” said Wolff.
