Just in time for the start of the Rolling Stones’ European tour on June 1st in the Atlético Madrid stadium, Mick Jagger denies comparisons with Harry Styles. His colleague, who is 50 years his junior, released his third album “Harry’s House” last weekend. Some critics felt reminded of the young “Sir Mick” in view of his stage presence.
In an interview with London’s “Sunday Times”, Jagger now stated that he considered comparisons between himself and Styles to be unoriginal. This has by no means a comparable voice. In addition, he has at best “a superficial resemblance to my younger self”.
Fueled by the ongoing rumors from the film scene that (part-time) actor Harry Styles could take over Jagger’s youth in an upcoming biopic, he clarified. “I wore a lot more makeup around my eyes then than he does now. Let’s not fool ourselves: I was far more androgynous! And he doesn’t have a voice like me and he also moves differently on stage. Which is absolutely fine – it’s not his fault.”
However, Jagger doesn’t want to appear as a vain rock pensioner; So no artificial dispute: “I like Harry – we have an uncomplicated relationship”.
With some distance, Jagger also comments on the death of Charlie Watts in August 2021 in the same place: If he turns to the drums during a show, he no longer expects him to be there.
He still thinks him often, in a way: “I would have called him recently and discussed the Arsenal match. He was a Tottenham supporter, I was Arsenal. I miss him as a player and as a friend.” As a live anecdote, Jagger tells us that the band always had to wait for Watts to say goodbye to the stage. “He fiddled with his drumsticks forever because he wanted them in order before he got up from his stool.”
On Pentecost Sunday, June 5th, the Rolling Stones will play in the Olympic Stadium in Munich, on July 27th in Gelsenkirchen, in the Arena Auf Schalke.
