Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors was released in February 1977. The band’s eleventh album is now one of the world’s best-selling albums. Musically and in terms of content, it is shaped by the problems of the band members – breakups, fraud and drugs.

The cover photo is unmistakable. Starring Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood. Nicks wears a black dress with trumpet sleeves, which she stages in a dance-like motion. Fleetwood stands in front of her, one leg up on a stool and two wooden balls dangling between his legs.

The wooden beads were up for auction last weekend and changed hands for $128,000. The buyer gets the story of how the bullets got between Fleetwood’s legs as “fake testicles” for free with this curious piece. They are toilet chains, which the band founder had stolen from one of his first performances in a club. He then tied them to his trousers and took them onto the stage. So the balls have become his lucky charm. The cover alludes to this story with the obvious presentation of the balls, but also delights in the obvious ambiguity.

In addition to the wooden balls, instruments, clothing and stage equipment were also auctioned off. Among them were personal belongings of Christine McVie. The dress she wore on the back of the Rumors cover sold for $56,250. The singer, keyboardist and songwriter passed away on November 30, 2022 at the age of 79.
