Michel and Behrens are Goalscorers of the Month

Status: 04.06.2022 1:00 p.m

The Sportschau viewers have decided: The dream combination of Sven Michel and Kevin Behrens from 1. FC Union Berlin in the game against Leipzig is the goal of April 2022.

It’s been a while since two players were awarded the gold Goal of the Month medal for a goal. In June 2020 it was the Frankfurt duo Dachi Kamada and André Silva with their “Gesamtkunstwerk” in the game against Hertha BSC.

Before that, such a co-production had only been successful five times: Klaus Scheer and Stan Libuda were the first in April 1972, followed by Günter Netzer and Gerd Müller in November 1972, Marco Bode and Miroslav Klose in June 2002, Julian Draxler and Raúl in July 2013 and Dirk Nowitzki and Lukas Podolski in July 2016.

Four stations from one gate to the other

So now it’s Michel and Behrens who, as the seventh duo in the more than 50-year history, can enter this extremely rare category with a goal. And to be completely honest, even four players would have deserved the medal. Julian Ryerson opens this attack with a beautiful pass across the field, then Sheraldo Becker plays the ball into the 16 right at Michels, who elegantly drops the ball off the heel so that Behrens shoots it flat into the net from eleven yards can. Four great actions that led to a dream goal.

Elected with 33 percent

The Berliners clearly win the vote with around 33 percent of the 170,000 votes. Ansgar Knauff from Eintracht Frankfurt (26.89) and Mirco Zavaglia from SpVgg Quierschied (20.66 percent) came in second and third. Fourth and fifth place went to Svenja Huth from VfL Wolfsburg (11.88 percent) and Dennis Srbeny from SC Paderborn 07 (7.76 percent).

Five goals of the month for Union

Michel and Behrens secured Union Berlin their fifth goal of the month award. The first Unioner to win the goal of the month was the Brazilian Silvio with his side kick against FC Ingolstadt in September 2011. Sebastian Polter (September 2018), Marcel Hartel (January 2019) and Andreas Voglsammer (January 2022) also won the title .
