Michael Vanthourenhout drives to victory in Zonnebeke,…

The Kasteelcross Zonnebeke is the fifth Exact Cross of the season. Lander Loockx was the first to enter the field, followed by the three West Flemish favorites: Michael Vanthourenhout, Gianni Vermeersch and Tim Merlier.

In the second round, the three of the West Flemish wanted to drive away, Loockx and Corsus had to do everything they could to get their way.

Halfway through the race, Lander Loockx crashed. By his fall he held up Yordi Corsus. The three West Flemish people: Vanthourenhout, Vermeersch and Merlier were now able to drive away with three.

Tim Merlier slipped his click pedal during a less dangerous part. The sprinter crashed into a post and lost valuable seconds. Merlier pulled out all the stops to rejoin the leaders, but that took a lot of effort.

When the penultimate round started, Vanthourenhout chose to go all out. The European champion drove everyone to victory in Zonnebeke. Vermeersch stayed ahead of Merlier and rode to second place. Merlier came third.

After Thibau Nys in Beringen, van der Poel in Mol and Loenhout and van Aert in Essen, a West Flemish now wins one of the Exact Crosses.
