Michael van Gerwen takes title in Australia after comeback in final

Michael van Gerwen has won the Queensland Darts Masters in Australia, a World Series tournament. The three-time world champion defeated Gerwyn Price from Wales, the world’s number 1, after a great catch-up race. Van Gerwen trailed 4-1 in the final, but still won the match 8-5.

The 33-year-old darts player had beaten the Englishman Joe Cullen 7-5 in the semi-finals. Van Gerwen then hit all his doubles.

In the final against Price, the 2021 world champion who outclassed Australian Gordon Mathers 7-1 in the semi-final, the Dutchman initially had a lot more trouble hitting the doubles. Trailing 4-2, ‘Mighty Mike’ threw out a score of 140. It turned out to be the turning point in the party.

A few weeks ago, Van Gerwen reached the final of the US Masters in New York, also part of the World Series of Darts. However, he lost to Englishman Michael Smith (4-8) in Madison Square Garden. At the end of last month, Van Gerwen won the World Matchplay for the third time. He also defeated Price in the final, 18-14.
