Michael van Gerwen on crypto trading: ‘Nobody knows what ‘he is talking about’

Michael van Gerwen says he never intended to promote the controversial crypto coin Florin among his followers. However, he is still square behind the coin. He calls the trade in digital currencies ‘a hobby’ that we should not take too seriously. “Sometimes you’re unlucky, sometimes you’re lucky. I’m mostly unlucky, by the way.”

Last week, together with Rico Verhoeven, Van Gerwen wrote about Florin on social media with great enthusiasm. Several followers of the darts player reacted negatively, they call Florin an unreliable coin and some even suspect a scam. Financial experts warned Omroep Brabant about the currency.

‘Try this’
Like Verhoeven, Van Gerwen says that he did not receive any payment for the tweet. “In fact, I have never spoken to the creator Rijk Plasman. I did play poker with his father, lawyer Peter Plasman.”

How does he end up with Florin? “Via via, a lot of business people are in it. They said ‘try this once’. On their website there is a very thick manual in English. If you read that you know: there is someone with sense behind this. And it is a pure Dutch currency, I like that,” says Van Gerwen.

It bothers him that now it seems like he wants to influence his followers. “If you see a Holland Casino advertisement, you don’t immediately run to a slot machine, do you? I just like it. I’m in a lot of different crypto coins.”

Van Gerwen does not think that he has a responsibility towards his more than 385,000 followers. “I’m not saying you should buy? And if people do buy, I hope they’re lucky and the value stays high.”

“Who are those experts?”
He wasn’t always that lucky. “Shiba Inu is also such a coin, I once bought it. Well it’s to cry how it looks now. Sometimes you’re unlucky, sometimes you’re lucky. I’m mostly unlucky, by the way. But it’s a hobby” well, that’s all.” The negativity bothers him: “Every new coin is said to suck.”

And those experts, Van Gerwen also wants to say something about that: “Who are those experts who are now losing Florin? Are they the same who predicted that bitcoin would one day be worth 100,000 euros? the better.”

In any case, Van Gerwen is not selling for the time being: “I’ll see in a few years.”
