Darts superstar Michael van Gerwen spontaneously had to cancel his appearance in Berlin. Now the reason is also known – and it is strange.
This cancellation came as a surprise – and had an unusual background. Darts professional Michael van Gerwen had to miss the Premier League evening in Berlin at short notice. The reason: a neck injury, drawn with a T-shirt sample for sponsors.
As Vincent van der Voort in the Podcast “Darts Draait Door” told, his friend and colleague immediately noticed that something was wrong. Van Gerwen could hardly move his neck, said van der Voort.
The World Association PDC initially justified the cancellation with a shoulder injury. In fact, it was a muscular blockade in the neck area that van Gerwen put out of action. The 35-year-old not only missed the evening in Berlin, but also the European Tour event in Riesa the following weekend.
“He was stiff, hardly said a word – you don’t know that at all,” continued van der Voort. The same evening both traveled back to the Netherlands. Van Gerwen could be massaged and visited a physiotherapist. But the pain remained. “He really wanted to play, but it just didn’t work,” said van der Voort.
Due to the forced break, the triple world champion lost important points in the fight for a place in the playoffs of the Premier League.
