Michael van Gerwen is eliminated in the quarterfinals of the World Series of Darts Finals. The three-time world champion from Vlijmen was trumped by Jonny Clayton from Wales in a packed AFAS Live in Amsterdam and lost 10-7 in legs.
Clayton, who is also the defending champion, will meet Dirk van Duijvenbode later on Sunday in the semifinals. The Dutchman defeated the Englishman Ryan Joyce in his match from the quarterfinals 10-9. The other semifinal of the tournament will be between Gerwyn Price and James Wade.
Van Gerwen won the World Series of Darts four times, but in this edition he made a premature retirement. “Disappointing, but don’t worry. It’s not one of the most important tournaments,” said Van Gerwen at Viaplay. “But of course you want to give something to the home crowd. I’m on my way back and Clayton is not in great shape so it was important to punish his mistakes and I didn’t do that.”
