Michael van Gerwen beats the world’s best and wins tournament again

Michael van Gerwen has won the Player Championship 10 in Barnsley. The three-time world champion from Vlijmen was 8-4 too strong for Peter Wright in the final of the small tournament of the PDC. His Scottish opponent is world leader.

The 32-year-old Van Gerwen had qualified for the final by winning 7-6 against José de Sousa. In the final battle, he cleared a 4-0 deficit to decide the match on his first match dart with double-20. It will have done ‘Mighty Mike’ well after his disappointing loss in the Premier League earlier this week.

It was the second time within a week that Van Gerwen had won such a tournament. Last weekend he was already the best at Player Championship 8 in Niedernhausen, Germany.

Due to his victory in the English place, Van Gerwen is now third on the so-called Order of Merit. This ranking keeps track of how much money top darts have earned in the past two seasons. Van Gerwen has collected about six tons, almost half what Wright and Gerwyn Price (Wales) threw together.
