Van Gerwen trailed Smith throughout the game, who let the Dutchman come back to 2-2, but then ran out again to 5-2 in legs. Van Gerwen was able to come back for two more legs, but then Smith threw 116 out.
Michael Smith also beat Jonny Clayton from Wales in the final: 6-4. Clayton had won his semi-final 6-4 against Englishman Chris Dobey.
