Michael Rösch “surprised” by coach earthquake in German biathlon

The German Ski Association has turned its biathlon area upside down after the past World Cup season. Because: Several coaches were exchanged in the men’s and women’s teams. Ex-biathlete Michael Rösch now endorsed the move.

The top German biathlon sport will start with new coaches in the future. The Slovenian Uros Velepec succeeds Isidor Scheuerl and supports the men’s head coach Mark Kirchner as an assistant. The Norwegian Sverre Olsbu Röiseland follows Florian Steirer and will work as a discipline trainer for the women’s selection from May. An approach that the former biathlete and current “Eurosport“expert Michael Rösch is well received.

“I was surprised and only found out relatively late that Florian Steirer’s contract had not been extended. On the other hand, I think it’s good that the coaches are being consistently replaced everywhere,” said the 38-year-old. He doesn’t know the reasons for Scheuerl and Steirer’s farewells. However, he supports the fact that the new path is taken with sports director Felix Bitterling. “You will see whether it will ultimately work.”

Rösch, who after his career at DSV also competed successfully for the Belgian selection for several years, could have made friends with a separation from men’s coach Kirchner. “Mark Kirchner has been with the men for a long time now. Of course, you could have used the lever here too.”

At the same time, however, the relay Olympic champion from Turin noted: “However, the question arises as to which coach is currently available and would dare to do this job.” Ultimately, however, a young coach like Sweden’s head coach Johannes Lukas would have been good for DSV, says Rösch, “so that you can break new ground here too.”
