According to the Sotheby’s auction house, the figure achieved is a new record for a lot of this type. The six different sneakers worn by Michael Jordan in the 1990s they were sold as a single package for eight million dollars at an auction in New York that took place on Friday, February 2. It’s about six different shoes and not three pairs that the NBA champion wore later give them to a Chicago Bulls communications executive, Tim Hallam. Each shoe would be gifted by Jordan after his decisive games that allowed the team to win six NBA championships: in 1991, 1993, and between 1996 and 1998. An atypical lot that recorded the second highest figure ever achieved for Michael Jordan sports items.

In fact, the record for items belonging to Michael Jordan sold at auction is one jacket worn in 1998 and sold in September 2022 for $10.1 million. This amount exceeded the cost of the shirt which Diego Armando Maradona he wore in Argentina’s quarter-final against England at the 1986 World Cup which was purchased at auction in May 2022 for $9.3 million.

Last April, the company of the French-Israeli tycoon Patrick Drahi sold at auction a pair of sneakers worn by Jordan during his last championship final in 1998 with the Chicago Bulls for 2.2 million dollars. The auction of these six different shoes therefore reached a record for this type of collector’s item. Naturally, Sotheby’s did not provide the name of the buyer of the lot. The six shoes are all from Nike and respectively: Air Jordan VI (1991), VII (1992), VIII (1993), XI (1996), XII (1997) and an Air Jordan XIV (1998).

In recent years there has been an increase in the value of objects belonging to athletes or musicians, thanks to an increase in demand for this type of product, as underlined by the various auction houses Sotheby’s, Christie’s or Julien’s.
