Antoine Fuqua will direct a planned adaptation of Michael Jackson’s life, which begins filming this year. The director said of the musician: “For me there is no artist with the same power, the same charisma and the sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson.” Jackson had inspired him to make music videos. “His music and his music videos are part of my worldview – and the opportunity to tell his story in tandem with his music on screen was irresistible,” Fuqua explained.
The biopic “Michael” is intended to represent Jackson’s artistic work and also give an insight into his private life. The film is set to chronicle his beginnings with The Jackson Five and his rise to superstardom until his death in 2009. He should also address the relationship between the musician and his father and the allegations that Jackson sexually abused minors. An aspect whose omission would certainly have led to much criticism.
The screenplay for “Michael” comes from John Logan. Graham King, who also worked on Bohemian Rhapsody, is producing the biopic. Furthermore, two administrators of Michael Jackson’s estate are involved – which could indicate a certain influence on the story. It is still unclear who embodies the pop star in the film.
Fuqua directed music videos early in his career. He produced clips for Prince, Queen Latifah and Stevie Wonder. His films include Training Day and Olympus Has Fallen. The director is currently working with Denzel Washington on the action thriller The Equalizer 3.
