MIA announces new album title

British musician MIA is back six years after her last album AIM. On May 26, she announced that her new album would be called MATA – as a taster she released the song “The One”. Producers Rex Kudo and T-Minus are behind the track. Here is the official music video.

In an interview with Apple Music 1, MIA explained that she was doing very well in the making of the song. But the new album has “two sides”. “It’s a bit of a clash, but the clash is between ego and spirituality.” It was difficult for the singer to find her spirituality because an ego is necessary as a musician. Only music genres like gospel are spiritual.

In addition to introspection, MIA also wants to devote itself to politics, which is not surprising. In the interview, the singer emphasized that she wanted to address Islamophobia and the war in the Middle East on her new album.

“I had a vision of Jesus”

Later in the interview, the topic of spirituality came up again. MIA, who fled to London with her family from her native Sri Lanka at the age of ten, has long felt comfortable as part of the Tamil community and as a Hindu. “But I had a vision. A vision in which Jesus appeared to me,” she said in an interview. The experience “turned her world upside down”. Since then she has seen herself as a “born-again Christian”.

Since the completion of her fifth studio album AIM, MIA has repeatedly released songs, including “POWA” and “CTRL”. She had her first number 1 hit as a featured artist with the Travis Scott song “Franchise”. MATA will be released via Island Records, an exact release date has not yet been set.
