Mexico officially announced its interest in hosting the 2036 or 2040 Summer Olympics at a meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach.
Mary Jose Alcala, head of the National Olympic Committee COM, and Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard presented a letter to this effect at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne.
“I had the honor of presenting Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, with Mexico’s letter of intent to organize the 2036-40 Olympic Games,” Ebrard tweeted, releasing the letter.
Mexico had already announced an application for the 2036 Games in October last year and had thus become a competitor for a possible German campaign. Mexico hosted the Summer Olympics in 1968.
Egypt and Indonesia, as well as the mayor of Istanbul, have also expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Games.
