Mexico: Footballer shot dead during game

It sounds like a scene from a crime film: However, that’s exactly what happened: footballer Sergio Alberto Jáuregui was murdered last Sunday during a friendly match in the Mexican city of Cuautla.

As Spanish media consistently report, he is said to have been running towards the substitutes’ bench towards the end of the game when, according to witness statements, an unknown man approached the amateur professional and shot her several times. According to reports, the perpetrator fled on a motorcycle.

A search is underway for the perpetrator

Sergio Alberto Jáuregui died immediately. Rescue workers on site were unable to do anything for him. Jáuregui’s former club, Atlético de San Luis Rey, wrote on Facebook: “We regret the death of our former player and captain Sergio Jáuregui. Our deepest condolences to his family.”

According to police, the perpetrator is still being sought. Mexico always has problems with acts of violence.
