Wolverhampton’s Jiménez scores
Mexico have qualified for the World Cup for the eighth time in a row and are in one of the pots in Friday’s draw, along with Canada and the USA. A 2-0 win against El Salvador on Wednesday evening (local time) saw the team move past the United States to second place in the CONCACAF table. Uriel Antuna (17th) and Wolverhampton’s Raúl Jiménez (43rd) put “el Tri” on the road to victory.
The USA lost their last qualifier 2-0 against Costa Rica after goals from Juan Pablo Vargas (51st) and Anthony Contreras (59th) but thanks to the better goal difference they stayed ahead of their rivals who are now tied on points and are after the also missed the World Cup four years ago in Russia in Qatar. Costa Rica has to make the playoffs against New Zealand.

The All Whites defeated outsiders Solomon Islands 5-0 (2-0) in Doha in the final of the Oceania qualifier for the tournament at the end of the year in Qatar. Bill Tuiloma (23rd minute/69th) with a brace and Newcastle’s Chris Wood (39th), Joe Bell (49th) and Matthew Jimmy David Garbett (90th + 1) scored the goals for the favorite. In the fight for a third World Cup participation after 1982 and 2010, New Zealand will now face Costa Rica on June 13th or 14th.
Canada had already qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1986 and for the second time in their history at the weekend and were able to get over the 0-1 draw in Panama. Because of the significantly better goal difference, the Canadians also remained group winners.
