Mexican city on stilts after arrest of son ‘El Chapo’: airline passengers have to take cover for bullets, buses and trucks on fire | Abroad

One of the sons of former Mexican drug cartel boss ‘El Chapo’ has been arrested in a military operation in northwestern Mexico. Ovidio Guzman ran into the lamp in the town of Culiacan, Sinaloa state. Suspected gang members set fire to buses and trucks in response. According to local media, armed groups also tried to take control of the airport. A plane that was about to leave for Mexico City came under fire. There were reportedly no injuries among the passengers and crew. Social media shows how travelers had to take cover.

‘El Chapo’ is in a US prison after being sentenced to life imprisonment in the US in 2019. Ovidio Guzman and his brothers have since taken over part of his Sinaloa cartel. They are considered one of the main traffickers of the drug fentanyl in Mexico.

“Stay at home”

After the operation, fierce fighting broke out between the security services and suspected gang members. Buses and trucks were set on fire and shots were also fired near a prison. There may be an escape attempt.

Images of armed men in a hospital are circulating on social media, presumably because they want to have gunshot wounds treated. Governor Ruben Rocha Moya called on people to stay home and keep windows and doors closed. Schools and public buildings also went under lock and key.

‘El Chapo’ headed the powerful Sinaloa Cartel for a quarter of a century. He was considered the most powerful drug trafficker in the world. In 25 years, he allegedly smuggled 1,200 tons of cocaine into the US and also ordered numerous murders.

Ovidio Guzman was arrested once in 2019, but was later released on the orders of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. For example, he wanted to prevent a massacre between criminals and security forces, possibly resulting in civilian casualties.
