The feast of the Epiphany is approaching – and thousands of Russians will go to the Epiphany fonts.
On the air of the program “Church and the World” (all episodes are available on the media platform “Looking”) Metropolitan Hilarion, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, commented on the misconception that immersion in a font can be equated with the absolution of sins.
The representative of the Russian Orthodox Church called this statement incorrect.
There is no remission of sins through immersion in the baptismal font.
Remission of sins occurs in the sacrament of confession, when a person comes to a priest, repents of sins. The priest reads a permissive prayer over him. “That’s when the absolution of sins takes place,” the metropolitan explained.
