The police and the Public Prosecution Service are conducting “in-depth investigation” into the circumstances of the drama in Nieuw-Beijerland in which six people were killed at a neighborhood party on Saturday evening and seven were injured. The Spanish driver of the lorry is being medically examined, his blood has been drawn to see if medication has been used and it is checked whether he had not telephoned or was otherwise distracted at the time of the accident.
That is what chief public prosecutor Hugo Hillenaar and deputy district chief Kini Homan of the Zuid-Holland Zuid police said at a press conference on Sunday evening. According to acting mayor Charlie Aptroot, the drama has plunged the Hoeksche Waard “into deep mourning”.
It is also being investigated why the 46-year-old driver, who has been insured, ended up there on the Zuidzijdsedijk in Nieuw-Beijerland with his empty truck. “The bottom stone will come up here”, Hillenaar promised.
