Meteorologist Liisa Rintaniemi got her evening star a year ago – Baby Year proved that the worry that had troubled the mind was for nothing

Meteorologist Liisa Rintaniemi wasn’t ready to give up the everyday life of small children. Now Liisa feels that the number of children is full, and her studies are also coming to an end.

Meteorologist Liisa Rintaniemi the alarm goes off at 3:30. An hour after waking up, he is at the MTV studio making weather maps. Before Good morning Finland start, Liisa is still putting on the mask.

– When I’ve woken up like that for 20 years, I don’t feel it anywhere anymore, says Liisa.

Liisa started forecasting on MTV’s weather maps at the age of 24 in 2003, but the young meteorologist thought that the weather was only temporary.

– I had completely different plans at that point. I had just graduated from an air traffic control course. I had worked in an aviation weather service and the airport seemed like an interesting workplace, Liisa says.

However, there were no jobs available for air traffic controllers, and Liisa was successful in MTV’s search instead. Although Liisa thought as the Maikkari years rolled by that 10 years was the maximum, she has enjoyed herself.

– I am a naturalist at heart. I guess I also have a little lens crush in me, I also like the performing side, Liisa says.

Liisa describes that meteorology students in her time were more shy physicists who didn’t wait in line for the screen. In Liisa’s case, the excitement stopped after the first five times.

– I never see myself on TV, because I only appear in live broadcasts. It helps to create an illusion, because I have no idea what size audience I’m speaking to. I do get nervous if I have to go and speak to a crowd of hundreds of people, says Liisa.

Live broadcasts are merciless, but Liisa is happy about the permissive atmosphere of her workplace. Liisa describes that she hasn’t had “crazy, crazy situations” during live broadcasts, but sometimes maps haven’t appeared on the screen at all due to technical problems. Then Liisa has spoken in front of the blue screen for two minutes.

However, the studio’s slippery floor and high heels are an equation that Liisa admits is exciting.

Liisa also worked as an air traffic controller in her time, but now the licenses have already expired. At the end of August, Liisa celebrated her 20th anniversary with her classmates. The course left people in Liisa’s life, not the least of which was her own spouse.

Evening star

Liisa returned to the weather maps in February after parental leave. Liisa and her spouse got their evening star a year ago. In addition to a one-year-old toddler, the family includes 10- and 13-year-old boys.

Baby fever reared its head when the younger son went to school.

– That’s when I realized that these won’t be in my hands for very long. That was the moment this started to smolder. I felt that I’m not ready to let go of everyday life with small children, says Liisa.

– When Kuopus was born, I was excited by the thought that it would be gone from our sons. Resources are distributed to more and more children. That worry has dissipated. I would not have thought that boys of that age could manage to be interested and participate. Kuopus has really become a part of our family – he is the golden nugget of the whole family, Liisa is happy.

Liisa’s approach to parenting is now more relaxed and gracious.

– There is a lot of experience. I know a little about what’s to come. Of course, if there were only school children, how easy life would be. It feels like there is endless time for your own things. Schoolchildren require different attention compared to babies.

– Now you also realize in a different way that this time is going by terribly quickly. A week from now, the situation will be different. These moments don’t last forever, says Liisa.

Two professions

In the near future, Liisa will graduate in her third profession – as a doctor. Liisa is often asked if she plans to specialize.

– At the moment, the answer is no. It is a hugely arduous path to become a specialized doctor and a demanding working and educational life. I can’t put my family through such a mess. There has to be enough at some point. The job description of a general practitioner is enough for me, says Liisa.

He is glad that the professions are not mutually exclusive. Liisa enjoys working on call and it also fits best into her everyday life.

Liisa does not dream of facial treatments and pampering, but of a rainy autumn day. The toddler would be napping and the boys at school.

– What brings me back the most is that everyday life is calmer – being able to get into a state where you feel calmer.

– Sometimes I feel really overwhelmed and wonder how things should be done differently, says Liisa.

This fall, Liisa plans to consciously cut out digital noise.

– I suffer from the same popular disease as many others: the ability to concentrate is really low. What I miss right now: to read a paper book from cover to cover or go for a long run without listening to any podcasts or looking at my cell phone, says Liisa.

Irregular everyday life

Liisa’s family is returning to a pattern where both parents work irregular shifts.

– We don’t have Sunday and Monday. Not necessarily Christmas and Midsummer so that both parents are at home. However, how to maintain a safe weekly rhythm for children? We have certain landmarks built. One of them is that we make pizza at home on Fridays. We have a certain Pizza Friday recipe set in stone – and we watch a movie. It’s a sign that the weekend is starting for the children, even if mom and dad are at work, says Liisa.

Liisa loves the basics of everyday life and knows that you don’t have to be traveling somewhere with the children all the time.

– Trips are not the ones that end up being memorable. I also consider it extremely important to listen to everything the children want to say. Also when they talk about a computer game. At some point, they might say something more significant – that’s when you hear all the stories, says Liisa.
