From Duran Duran to Madonna, “Stranger Things” weaves some of the most important songs of the ’80s into its plot – giving some tracks a second lease of life. For example, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” climbed to number one in the UK charts 37 years after it was first published.
Eddie, the master of puppets
A very specific Metallica piece also played a major role in the Netflix series: In one scene, the series character Eddie confronts the dark forces with “Master of Puppets” by performing the heavy metal classic on his electric guitar . The song was released in 1986 on the album of the same name and is considered one of the milestones of thrash metal. It’s already number six in the American Spotify charts – a remarkable position for an eight-and-a-half-minute track that sounds completely different from the otherwise standardized streaming hit parades.
A hit is a hit
Metallica have now released a video on TikTok as a thank you, in which they pay homage to Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn: “Eddie, this is for you!” It says at the beginning of the video – after all, you can see the band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich , Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett, heads spinning, playing their old, new song. A hit is just a hit.

Five days ago, Metallica already expressed their excitement about the soundtrack on Instagram: “The way the Duffer brothers integrated music into ‘Stranger Things’ has always been on a high level,” according to the band. One is overjoyed that “Master of Puppets” has not only been included in the show, but is also the focus of a central scene – and how “blown away” by the result.
