Kirk Hammett and guitar maker Gibson on Tuesday (March 28) released a signature guitar modeled after the legendary 1959 Les Paul Standard “Greeny” owned by Metallica lead guitarist.
The replica can be in the Custom shop version have since been purchased for a whopping 21,299 euros. Another, probably much cheaper version of the Les Paul Standard will be on sale from April 11th. “I am very honored and grateful for this opportunity with Gibson,” Hammett said in the release’s press release. “Being able to share some of the mojo that defines ‘Greeny’ means a lot to me. Knowing that everyone can feel some of that ‘Greeny’ magic is exciting. I truly believe these models are just as inspirational as the original and I hope you are too!”
The one-off has been a permanent fixture in Hammett’s guitar collection since 2014, when he purchased it for an estimated $2 million. The electric guitar got its name from its original owner, Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green, who used it for “Albatross”, among other things. In 1970 he passed it on to later Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore. In 2006, for financial reasons, he was forced to sell the guitar, which was then owned by various private collectors until it finally ended up with Hammett.
