BANGALORE (Reuters) – According to the provider Meta, WhatsApp users should now be able to use the short message service in countries where it is blocked.
Proxy servers would be supported in the new version of the app, the Facebook mother explained on Thursday. Users in countries like Iran and Syria have so far used Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to circumvent Internet censorship. Should lockdowns continue, “we hope this solution will help people wherever there is a need for secure and reliable communications,” Meta explained. Iran restricted access to WhatsApp and the online network Instagram after protests began over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody.
