In a video, Instagram head Adam Mosseri proclaimed the arrival of non-fungible tokens through a new feature, Digital Collectibles. This will allow creators and collectors to share their NFTs on their Instagram account, through posts, stories or messages. This is not a surprise since the idea had been floating around since January and had been confirmed in March.

For the moment, only a few users selected by Meta, the parent company, have access to this new feature. ” One of the reasons we start small is to make sure we can learn from the community. We want to be sure we know how to embrace these principles of distributed trust and distributed power, despite the fact that we are, yes, a centralized platform “, explains Adam Mosseri.
At the launch of Digital Collectibles, only collections of NFTs backed by Ethereum and Polygon blockchains will be accepted. Those on Flow and Solana will follow. As for compatible wallets, the feature will support Rainbow, MetaMask, and Trust Wallet, along with Coinbase, Dapper, and Phantom in the near future.
Preparing the metaverse
Meta has understood that its social networks should adopt Web3 technologies if it wants to democratize its approach to the metaverse. Mark Zuckerberg, its founder, revealed that similar features would soon be implemented on Facebook and possibly on future applications of the group.
” By building support for NFTs, we aim to improve accessibility, reduce barriers to entry into this universe and help make the NFT space more open to all communities. “, precise the press release. To do this, Meta is working on a project allowing the non-fungible tokens to be used with augmented reality devices. These will be usable in Instagram stories thanks to Spark AR, the in-house augmented reality software platform.
However, Instagram is not the first to introduce this technology on its social network. Since January, Twitter has given users of its freemium service Twitter Blue the possibility of using one of their NFTs as a profile picture.
