Inter Miami CF has strengthened itself with another Argentinian young player. On Friday, Beckham’s club announced the signing of Federico Redondo from Argentinos Juniors, reportedly for a fee of $8 million (€7.45 million). The Argentine first division club will also receive 15 percent of all future transfer profits should the 21-year-old defensive midfielder move again. The son of Real Madrid icon Fernando Redondo is the third most expensive signing in the club’s young history.
“I am very happy to join a club that is growing so much,” said Redondo. “It’s a great opportunity to share the playing field with top players. I’m looking forward to integrating into the group. We have to move forward step by step, but we will always have big dreams.” Redondo is the fourth Argentine to join the club since superstar Lionel Messi (36) joined Inter Miami last summer. Messi and head coach Gerardo Martino have made southern Florida a sought-after destination for young Argentine players. In the summer, Inter also signed the promising Facundo Farías (21) and Tomás Avilés (20).

According to Scott Christensen, area manager for Argentina and South America at Transfermarkt, Redondo may be the MLS club’s most surprising Argentine signing yet. “I thought he would go to one of the top five European leagues. There were rumors about AC Milan, Bayern Munich or VfL Wolfsburg. Considering his father played for Milan, it seemed like an exciting possibility. But obviously it was a bigger incentive to be on the pitch with Messi, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suárez.”
Redondo to Inter Miami: “One of Argentina’s most promising players”
Busquets – despite Messi – may have been the most important factor in Redondo’s decision to move to Inter Miami rather than Europe. “His style is similar to that of his father or Busquets,” says Christensen. “He is a tall central midfielder who tries to control the tempo of the game. He is a bit slow, but intelligent and creative and usually well placed on the field. I think the short passing game is his best skill. Redondo is a smart player and learning from Busquets could have been an important factor. He is one of Argentina’s most promising players.”
This is reflected in Redondo’s current market value: With 9 million euros, the 21-year-old midfielder was most recently in second place among the most valuable players in the Argentine Liga Profesional behind future Man City professional Claudio Echeverri (18), who was worth 12 million .Euro is taxed. Last year, Redondo only managed two goals and two assists in 58 games in all competitions. According to Wyscout, last season he ranked fifth among all Argentinos Juniors players and 22nd in the Argentine first division with 54.16 passes per 90 minutes. Improving those stats and taking the next step to Europe will be the main goal for Redondo at Inter Miami.
