Merlin Hummel has been the first German hammer thrower to crack the 80-meter brand for 18 years.

The European Championships took second place on Saturday at the Halle Werfertagen with an attempt at 80.11 m behind Olympic champion Ethan Katzberg (81.22 m).

As the last German so far, Markus Esser had thrown over 80 meters in August 2007.

In addition to Esser, former World Cup and European Championship, and the 1999 world champion Karsten Kobs is Hummel the only third German hammer thrower, who exceeded the 80 meters this millennium.

Behind Katzberg and Hummel, the American Rudy Winkler took third place with 80.01 m.
