Merijn Scheperkamp finished second at the NK sprint. The 22-year-old Hilversummer managed to keep some big names behind him. Janno Botman finished just outside the podium in Thialf.
In the final 1,000 meters, Scheperkamp even had a view of the national title. In a direct ride against Hein Otterspeer, the leader in the standings, he was allowed to make up 0.35 seconds. Although Olympic medalists Kjeld Nuis and Thomas Krol came first and second in the final 1,000 meters, they no longer played a significant role.
Scheperkamp rode to fifth place in the 1,000 meters in 1.07.96. With that he remained second in the general classification, which entitles him to a ticket for the European Championship sprint. Earlier in the day, Scheperkamp won the 500 meters in 34.69, faster than the fastest time on day one.
