Mercedes-Benz shares: In a discussion on short-time work, researchers call for the special rules to be ended

“The special rules for short-time work will run until the middle of the year. And if, contrary to expectations, the energy crisis does not really hit again, that will be enough,” said the scientist at the Institute for Labor Market and Vocational Research (IAB) of the German Press Agency. In deep crises, when the losses are large, such special rules work well. “Outside of such times you should keep your hands off it.”

Weber was referring to the simplified access to short-time work extended by the Federal Ministry of Labor until the end of June due to the energy price crisis. For example, the necessary proportion of employees who are affected by a loss of work was reduced from one third to ten percent. Similar to Weber, the FDP MP Carl-Julius Cronenberg had expressed himself in the “FAZ”. A ministry spokeswoman declined to comment on the proposal.

Mercedes recently announced that it would register several hundred employees for short-time work at its plant in Bremen and at the main plant in Untertürkheim due to delivery difficulties. Shortly before, the Stuttgart company had announced a consolidated result of 14.8 billion euros for 2022. This constellation was also met with criticism.

This case is “a bit strange,” said Weber. However, the requirements for short-time work benefits were not based on the profit situation. Even during Corona, the support flowed to companies in the profit zone. You have to exercise a sense of proportion. The delivery difficulties are just about to relax. “This will not be a typical case.” It is therefore not worthwhile to “reach into the regulation box”. Short-time work allowance is not tax money, but contribution money from the company and the employees concerned and thus an entitlement to unemployment insurance.
