Meppeler suspected of rape after DNA hit after 18 years

The DNA of a 37-year-old man from Meppel was still matched in early 2022 with a rape in 2005. The man had to give up his cell material for another offense. This matched DNA stored in the Dutch DNA database.

This became clear today during a short introductory session. The judge decided that the man will be detained longer. De Meppeler is still being examined by a psychologist. His case will be heard later this year.

So far, no suspect of the rape on November 21, 2005 in Meppel had ever been found. A woman on a bicycle was hit by a scooter rider. The man on the scooter threatened to knock her down if she didn’t cooperate.

She was sexually assaulted and the man left a DNA trail. The description of the scooter also appeared in reports of an assault in September 2004 at Havelte and in July 2011 in Meppel.

Those women also indicated that they had been approached and touched roughly by a man on a scooter. The man denies the assaults. About the fact that his DNA was left behind in 2005, De Meppeler told the police that the sex would not have happened under duress.

According to his lawyer, the man has often come into contact with the judiciary, “but never for a sex case. And that is striking”. What the man had to donate DNA for in early 2022 was not announced.
